The majority of complaints made to the Press Complaints Commission, which raise a possible breach of the Code of Practice, are resolved directly between the Commission's staff, editors and complainants.
These are either settled to the express satisfaction of the complainant following some remedial action by the editor or are not pursued by complainants following an explanation or other response from the publication.
Below are summaries of the latest complaints involving the regional press which fall into the first category.
Nottingham Evening Post
Andrea Bennington complained that an article was inaccurate when it quoted the prices of certain season tickets for Notts County Football Club. (Clause 1)
Resolution: The complaint was resolved when the newspaper printed a correction the following day and wrote a personal letter of apology to the complainant.
Scarborough Evening News
Carol Robinson complained that articles about her property were inaccurate and that she had been a victim of harassment by the newspaper. (Clause 1, 4)
Resolution: The complaint was resolved when the newspaper apologised privately for any distress caused by the publication of the articles and gave assurances that it would not attempt to contact the complainant in the future.
Western Daily Press
Cathy Bakewell MBE, the Leader of Somerset County Council, complained that an opinion piece cast unfair aspersions on the council, in particular by suggesting its policy on road signs was the result of a lucrative deal with 'manufacturers of street furniture'. (Clause 1)
Resolution: The complaint was resolved when the newspaper, having published a letter in which the complainant could address the other matters of concern and making clear that the article was not actually making a specific allegation of underhand goings-on, amended its records to reflect the existence of the PCC investigation.
