New chairman takes up his post

Sir Christopher Meyer has taken up his post as the new chairman of the Press Complaints Commission.

A former press secretary to John Major, he has a distinguished diplomatic background and was most recently ambassador to the United States.

His appointment follows the retirement of Lord Wakeham in February 2002.

Since then Professor Robert Pinker has been acting chairman, and he will now return to his role as privacy commissioner on the PCC.

  • Dianne Thompson, chief executive of Camelot Group plc, is to join the PCC as one of its nine lay members, following the retirement of Arzina Bhanji.
