Resolved complaints

Resolved complaints dealt with by the Press Complaints Commission during July, August and September, 2000

The majority of complaints made to the Press Complaints Commission, which raise a possible breach of the Code of Practice, are resolved directly between the Commission's staff, editors and complainants.

These are either settled to the express satisfaction of the complainant following some remedial action by the editor or are not pursued by complainants following an explanation or other response from the publication.

Listed below are summaries of those complaints, concerning regional newspapers, which fall into the former category.

Barnsley Chronicle
Mrs Carol Green of Barnsley complained that an article reporting the annual general meeting of the Barnsley Blind and Partially Sighted Association was innacurate.
Resolution: The newspaper published a correction.

North Norfolk News
A man from Denbigh complained on behalf of his mother that a published letter from the chairman of Sheringham Town Council stated her full address and so intruded into her privacy.
Resolution: The editor sent a personal letter of apology to the complainant's mother and gave an assurance that her home address would not be published.

Southern Daily Echo
A woman from Winchester, Hants, complained that a report of a sexual attack on her then 15-year-old daughter, now deceased, named her and was distressing to her family.
Resolution: The newspaper had understood that they were not prevented from naming someone now deceased but nevertheless expressed their regret that the article had caused distress to the family.

The Falkirk Herald
Ms S Quinn of West Lothian complained that an article about her contained inaccuracies.
Resolution: The editor wrote a letter of apology to the complainant.

Windsor and Maidenhead Observer
Mr D Gould of Torquay copmplained that articles about his employment tribunal were innacurate and distorted.
Resolution: The newspaper published a further article of clarification which reported that his employer had admitted unfair dismissal.
