BA (Hons) Journalism Studies
Number 1 in the UK for student satisfaction in Journalism for the second year running
The National Student Survey results for 2011 place Sheffield top in the UK for overall satisfaction with Journalism. For the fourth year running over 95 per cent of our final year students agreed that they were satisfied with the quality of their course – the highest score achieved by any Journalism department in the country.
Our BA course has accreditation from the industry’s principal training organisations, the NCTJ, the PTC and the BJTC.
Students may also choose to sit the NCTJ exams in law, news writing, public affairs and shorthand.
BA (Hons) Journalism with French
BA (Hons) Journalism with Germanic Studies
BA (Hons) Journalism with Hispanic Studies
BA (Hons) Journalism with Russian
We are now offering a group of dual degrees combining journalism with French, Germanic Studies, Hispanic Studies or Russian. These programmes are run jointly by the Department of Journalism Studies and the School of Modern Languages and Linguistics. They are also accredited by the NCTJ and the PTC.
MA/Postgraduate Diploma in Print Journalism
Our NCTJ accredited print course aims to produce top-class reporters who dig out the best stories and turn in crisp, engaging copy against tight deadlines.
We will also prepare you for the increasingly multi-media print environment by teaching you how to record video and audio to include in your own web pages.
Students studying for MA Print Journalism will also complete a Print Journalism Portfolio, a substantial individual journalism project conducted under supervision.
You’ll also undertake a placement in a print newsroom at Easter or in the early summer.
Students may also choose to sit the NCTJ exams in law, news writing, public affairs and shorthand.
MA/Postgraduate Diploma in Broadcast Journalism
As a student on our BJTC accredited broadcast course, you’ll learn how to write for radio and television news, how to ask the questions that matter and how to find your own stories and turn them into sharp and imaginative broadcast material.
You’ll learn how to record and film material and edit it using a desk top software package and how to tell stories on the web.
Students studying for MA Broadcast Journalism will also complete a Broadcast Journalism Portfolio. This consists of an individual journalism project conducted in either radio or television under the supervision of a tutor.
You’ll also undertake a work placement at Easter or early in the summer.
Students may also choose to sit the NCTJ exams in law and public affairs.
MA/Postgraduate Diploma in Magazine Journalism
Out PTC accredited magazine course will teach you to write, edit and design your own magazines and to develop the skills of a magazine professional. We will give you the edge to succeed in an intensely competitive industry.
You will produce material for all types of magazines such as online, business to business, specialist and consumer.
For the MA you will also write and edit a substantial magazine project under supervision.
You’ll also undertake a work placement at Easter or in the early summer.
Students may also choose to sit the NCTJ exams in law, public affairs, news writing and shorthand.
MA/Postgraduate Diploma in Web Journalism
Our BJTC accredited web course aims to produce top class journalists with added skills suitable for working in an online environment.
You will learn how to build a website, how to construct stories in a web-friendly manner, and how to take advantage of the multi-media aspects of the web such as video and audio.
For the MA you will also complete an individual project involving the construction of a news-based personal website under the supervision of a tutor.
You’ll also undertake a work placement at Easter or in the early summer.
Students may also choose to sit the NCTJ exams in law and public affairs.
MA in International Political Communication
The MA in International Political Communication will equip you with a solid grounding in methods and processes of international political communication research, in-depth knowledge of the structures and processes of public and political communication within an international context, an advanced understanding of debates at the forefront of political communication, expert training in practical skills involved in public and political communication and a wide range of transferable skills.
This course is intended for individuals who wish to go on to do MPhil or PhD research in Political Communications or for people who wish to move into a career in political or public communications.
The MA in International Political Communication is a taught course over one year consisting of units of study totalling 120 credits and a dissertation of 60 credits.
MA in Global Journalism
Students on the course will engage in debates about issues, mechanisms and processes of journalism in a comparative, global context, as well as getting hands-on practical experience of communicating news in the contemporary global media environment. It offers a mix of academic and practical study.
This course is intended for individuals who wish to go on to do MPhil or PhD research in Journalism Studies or for people who wish to move into a career in political or public communications, international media development or related fields.
