Fourteen MPs have signed up to a Parliamentary Early Day Motion in support of the Lancashire Telegraph’s Wasted Lives Campaign.

The campaign, to prevent the deaths of young drivers on the roads, is supported by more than 1,000 people in Lancashire and calls for an educational safe driving DVD to be given to all 15-year-olds in the region.

The campaign began on the back of statistics that showed 22 young drivers were killed on the county’s roads in 2006, with a further 254 young people being seriously injured.

Proposals also include restricting people under 25 from motorway driving until they has passed a specific motorway driving test, display of ‘P’ plates for two years for new drivers, and a host of regulations on carrying passengers, the size of the engine allowed, and penalties for speeding.

The Motion, which is a parliamentary petition, said: “[This House] believes that each one of these deaths is a tragedy which ruins the lives of bereaved relatives and friends; further believes that more should be done to promote safe driving, especially among young and newly qualified drivers, and welcomes the Lancashire Telegraph's Wasted Lives Campaign.

“[…and this House] calls on the Government to look closely at the Lancashire Telegraph's proposals, which have widespread support, with a view to implementing them.”
