Star looks to protect communities amid house building boom plan

The Evening Star in Ipswich is keeping a close eye on plans to build thousands of new houses on its patch, with a three-pronged campaign to protect the communities of Felixstowe, Walton and the Trimleys.

More than 3,400 houses could be built in those areas over the next few years, increasing the housing stock by 25 per cent. Many people are concerned about the impact this will have.

Felixstowe editor Richard Cornwell said the Star had launched its campaign to show support for readers who were worried about the rural communities of Walton and the Trimleys, not just in terms of housing but also on increased traffic.

He said: "We have stressed that we are not against sensible development, but we don't want the whole area swamped. We think 3,400 homes is far too many.

"But this is not a campaign with a quick win."

Suffolk Coastal District Council has said its preferred option is to build 3,400 houses in the Trimleys and Felixstowe, but the Government wants several options put forward and a public enquiry is expected.

Richard said the Star would be reporting on developments and the impact on the area as fully as it could.
