Bid to raise £100,000 launched by paper 'at centre of its community'

The Bolton News has launched a campaign to raise £100,000 for its local hospice.

The newspaper wants to generate enough cash to allow Bolton Hospice to revamp its dilapidated garden area.

So far the Garden of Tranquillity appeal has generated more than £10,000.

Members of the public have been sending cheques - some for up to £500 - while community groups and companies in the town are arranging a series of fundraising events.

Editor-in-chief Steve Hughes said: "We pride ourselves on being at the centre of the community that we serve and always try to support local causes.

"Bolton Hospice is a valuable local resource and provides an excellent service to the people of Bolton.

"Because it is funded mainly through charitable donations it cannot afford to revamp its gardens, so we have stepped in to help."

The hospice has set up a dedicated donation line so members of the public can give cash by using a credit card.

Meanwhile, The Bolton News is in the process of organising a charity auction night and dinner dance to boost the campaign's coffers.

The hospice garden is covered in grass and has no disabled access. Paving stones are cracked, uneven and broken and there is little in the way of flowers and shrubbery.

Under the plans, pathways will be created. There will also be private seating areas, a water feature, and a sensory garden.

  • The Bolton Evening News has now changed its name to The Bolton News to reflect its move to overnight printing. The name change means it has dropped the word 'evening' from its title for the first time in 139 years.
