Feel safer with The Star

A new campaign from the Sheffield Star is encouraging readers to Stand Together to make them feel safer where they live.

Despite Sheffield being lauded as a safe city by the paper, antisocial behaviour is blighting some areas.

An online questionnaire is one way the paper is encouraging people to get involved.

And the paper is running stories about "inspirational people" from across the city who are standing up against such behaviour in their own way.

City council leader Jan Wilson told readers that the authority had already made good progress in tackling problems.

The campaign will feature stories of communities which have successfully transformed their neighbourhoods, and schemes which are helping keep young people off the streets and out of trouble.

The paper’s editorial column said: "A lot of problems are caused by a minority of people on estates but if the majority of people stand together, they can fight it together.

"Many people sit at home in isolation and fear but by talking to each other, neighbours can deal with problems as a team."

Coun Wilson said: "But this is a tough problem, we can't deal with it overnight and we can't do it alone.

"It is vital that we work with the police, fire service, Sheffield Homes and, of course, with local people."
