Two more buildings saved in Liverpool's push to 'stop the rot'

Two further targets have been removed from the 'critical list' thanks to the Liverpool Echo's ongoing campaign to save rotting historical monuments in the city.

Readers of the Echo have been contacting the paper to persuade it to expose buildings which readers believe shame the city.

Thanks to the campaign the monuments of the Old Courthouse, in West Derby, and the Nelson Memorial, in Exchange Flags, have had £200,000 worth of restoration meaning they have now been removed from the Buildings at Risk register. English Heritage is calling for buildings to be preserved before they are lost for ever.

The removal of these landmarks from the list is part of the campaign's wider success, which thanks to the Echo's 'Stop the Rot list', is saving Liverpool's historical structures.

The Albany Building and the Tower Building in Strand have also been removed from the list by English Heritage, after another successful campaign from the Echo saw them renovated and transformed into flats.

Head of conservation at Liverpool City Council, Steve Corbett said: "This is excellent news and reflects the hard work we've done over the last three years."

Councilor Berni Turner, executive member for the heritage said: “It demonstrates our determination, along with partners and some developers, to show Stop the Rot is not just words, but we are taking concerted action which is having a real effect.”

English Heritage, which gave advice on the Albany, which now consists of 123 apartments and 20,000sq ft of commercial space said its new approach, "encouraged people to think of more imaginative ways of rescuing buildings".

Although the Stop the Rot campaign has saved numerous Liverpool landmarks, there are still many buildings at risk.
