Evening Courier makes readers 'proud'

The Halifax Evening Courier has launched a campaign to celebrate the good things about the district of Calderdale.

The newspaper has decided to take a positive stance after feedback from readers said its focus sometimes seemed to be on "death and destruction".

It will also be encouraging people to play their part in making the area a great place to live, and will be highlighting individuals who make a contribution to the community.

Evening Courier editor John Furbisher said: "Readers told us that they would like to see a bit more in the paper that would make them proud of where they live.

"We have to carry the hard news, but there are also plenty of good things happening."

As part of the campaign the Evening Courier will be featuring feel-good stories, and has already featured several local celebrities who gave their views on what they like about Calderdale.

It has also launched an anti-litter drive, and is investigating 'grot spots' in the area with the aim of getting them cleaned up.

John said: "We've had some very postive feedback already and readers are saying 'well done' for launching the campaign."

  • Readers are to be asked to vote for their all-time greats from Calderdale. People expected to feature include Nobel prizewinner Sir John Cockroft who split the atom and built the British nuclear industry, mathematician Henry Briggs who introduced logarithms, and Percy Shaw, who invented Catseyes.
