Flying start for Stand up for Salford hotline

A hotline to report young thugs damaging the reputation of Salford has got off to flying start.

The phone line, part of the Manchester Evening News' Stand Up For Salford campaign, allows people to pass on information to help stamp out yobbery.

Since its launch, more than 40 calls have been received.

The newspaper wants to help restore the reputation of a great city that has been tarnished by a lawless few.

National headlines were triggered by Chief Supt David Baines' claim that gangs of ‘feral youths' with no parental control, and fuelled by alcohol, were intimidating residents.

With the help of community leaders, police and Salford council, the MEN has set up a confidential telephone hotline to allow people to pass on information which can be used to stamp out such ‘yobbery’.

In addition to the response by telephone, more than 50 comments have been posted on the website ManchesterOnline.

And last week Salford MP and Police Minister Hazel Blears backed the campaign and promised more resources to beat street thugs.

She said: "I am delighted at the tone of the campaign. Salford people are brave, courageous and proud of their city."
