Hard-hitting News campaign aims to stub out the habit

The Bolton Evening News is calling for an end to smoking in public places in the town.

The regional newspaper has launched a campaign calling for a ban on the habit in pubs, restaurants and public buildings in the area.

If successful Bolton could become the first no smoking town in the country.

The paper kicked off its campaign with a hard-hitting front-page featuring the picture of a 58-year-old smoker attached to an oxygen tube, with the stark headline: "Staring Death In The Face."

The paper says that nearly three people in every 10 in Bolton smoke, resulting in 180 cases of lung cancer in the town every year. It is hoped that by introducing a ban some of these will be encouraged to quit the habit.

Editor Steve Hughes said: "We think this is an extremely worthwhile campaign. If Bolton is made a no smoking town, it will improve the health of all who live here."

The paper's fight is part of its long-running Fit for Life campaign, and it has already gained the support of MPs and council leader Barbara Ronson, who has said that she would support a ban if the government gave local authorities the power to impose one.

The Evening News is also printing a coupon for readers to fill in and a petition has been orgaised throughout the town.

These will all be handed to the town's council leader and a copy will also be sent to minister for public health, Melanie Johnson.
