Evening Telegraph makes plea for 'show of solidarity'

The Derby Evening Telegraph has stepped up its campaign against the announced closure of 16 post offices in the city centre.

The petition, Don't rip the heart out of our community, has received front-page exposure on three occasions, in a determined effort to rally readers against the decision.

It strongly believes in the importance of accessible post office branches, especially to increasingly isolated members of society, such as the elderly and disabled.

With the deadline for objections Friday, October 8, the Evening Telegraph has called for a show of solidarity to retain the city's traditional postal service.

Pensioners and members of the city council have echoed the Telegraph's push, dismissing claims that the closure is designed to safeguard the future of urban post office branches.

A motion was unanimously supported by 51 city councillors, calling for the post office to withdraw plans while further investigations take place into the implications.

The support opposing the dilemma in Derby has been mirrored in Lincoln, with the Lincolnshire Echo responding to news that several post offices in the area are to be axed. Lincoln MP Gillian Merron has backed the Echo's Save Our Post Offices campaign.
