Daily Echo battles to save special needs school

The Daily Echo in Bournemouth is campaigning to save a special needs school after local education bosses voted for it to be closed.

The proposal to shut Penwithen School and put special needs children into mainstream education will now go before cabinet on September 8.

But it could be overturned if there is sufficient public support - and the Echo is calling on readers to support the cause by filling in comment coupons which it will present to the local education authority.

Education reporter Louise Isaacs said: "We have still got a chance to keep it open.

"It's a wide-ranging issue and a difficult one to see where it's going to go.

"Parents are saying there will be no adequate provisions for the children if the school closes. We are asking readers to fill in the coupons and we will be passing on all feedback to the LEA."

Earlier this year the Daily Echo successfully campaigned to keep open Leeson House outdoor activity centre.

Louise said: "When the LEA voted for the closure of Leeson House there was a public outcry and we managed to overturn the decision.

"We live in hope for this campaign."
