The Sutton Borough Guardian is calling for Cheam to be put back on the postal map after the Royal Mail deleted it from its records.
The North Cheam-based newspaper has launched a Proud to be Cheam campaign, and is calling on readers to show their support.
It says that Royal Mail's failure to accept Cheam as a distinct postal address could lead to the ancient district being wiped off the map.
And it has told how the move to list homes in Cheam under 'Sutton' has led to people getting the wrong mail - and one resident received a letter on which 'Cheam' had been crossed out on the envelope.
The fight for Cheam to be acknowledged by the Royal Mail is already gathering support, and Sutton and Cheam MP Paul Burstow has written to Royal Mail and petitioned Cheam residents.
He is also consulting residents over proposed boundaries for the area to be defined as Cheam, and if these can be determined this could lead to a ballot for recognition.
