The Manchester Evening News is stepping up a campaign to ban over-the-counter sales of fireworks - and is pledging not to lose momentum even though another bonfire night has passed.
In a comment piece describing how the chief constable is backing the paper's call for a total ban, the paper said: "It is more than a month since bonfire night - and yet STILL there are deafening fireworks going off, shattering the peace and scaring the life out of householders, particularly the elderly."
The paper is determined not to let the campaign fizzle out.
It has already delivered a dossier to the department of trade and industry, as well as a selection of readers' letters from one of the biggest postbags the paper has ever received.
To boost support, the MEN has now written to every MP in the country asking them where they stand on the issue.
It has also written to every chief constable and every chief fire officer.
The paper is asking if they support:
A total ban on the sale of fireworks to the public, except for where there is an official display;
A partial ban, selling only from approved and monitored premises for a limited period;
No ban at all.So far, it says, early results are encouraging, and the paper is preparing to report on the full survey results.
