Generous readers dig deep

Readers of the York Evening Press have donated more than £5,000 to the paper's Africa appeal.

The Evening Press joined forces with Unicef to raise funds for the estimated six million starving youngsters in southern Africa.

Readers have been urged to send in donations to the paper or to organise fundraising events.

The money will be sent to Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Swaziland, Mozambique, Zambia and Malawi. As well as the current famine, an average of one in four people across the region is infected with HIV/AIDS.

Yorkshire's regional fundraising manager Louis Coles said: "The support of Evening Press readers has been absolutely fantastic.

"Everyone at Unicef has been touched by the generosity of York residents."

Therapeutic feeding for 70,588 youngsters will be paid for by the money as well as 504 relocation kits for children orphaned by HIV/AIDS. 300 young lives could also be saved from cholera and dysentery with proper treatment.
