High praise for Argus crime fight

The South Wales Argus has been praised for its efforts in helping to cut car crime.

Wales office minister Don Touhig said the Argus's Car Safe campaign was helping Gwent Police's own anti-car crime initiative, Operation Maple.

And he said he was pleased that vehicle crime in Gwent had fallen by almost a third from the start of April to the end of October.

The minister comments came after a visit to Gwent Police headquarters to discuss Operation Maple, and to see a demonstration of the automatic number plate recognition system.

He said: "The Argus campaign has also helped and when I visited the operations centre there were copies of the Argus stories plastered all over the wall. The police value it.

"If we're going to fight this there needs to be a partnership between the police, the community, the media and others, saying we're not going to tolerate this."
