Record numbers sign up to join Evening Times fight

Record numbers of readers have joined a campaign by the Evening Times in Glasgow to save the Queen Mother's Maternity Hospital in the city.

More than 82,000 people have now signed the paper's petition to give their backing to its Hands Off Yorkhill campaign - making it the biggest petition collected in Scottish health history.

But despite such strong support for the paper's fight, health board bosses have said that they will not be swayed by public opinion and will only respond to hard clinical arguments.

The closure of the Queen Mother's was approved by the city's health board following recommendations by an expert panel that the hospital be shut as part of a reorganisation of maternity services across the city.

The panel also suggested that the board considered the longer term relocation of the Royal Sick Children's Hospital at Yorkhill, which shares a site with the Queen Mother's.
