The York Evening Press has finally won its campaign to make a North Yorkshire accident blackspot safe, after a four-year fight.
Plans for a new flyover at Bilbrough Top on the A64 between York and Tadcaster have now been given the go-ahead, allowing a gap in the central reservation to be closed.
The Evening Press began its fight in 1999, presenting a former roads minister with a petition calling for the immediate closure of the gap.
But the Highways Agency said the gap would not be closed until work began on the new flyover at Bilbrough Top.
Since then three people have been killed at the accident blackspot - and the Evening Press has continued with its campaign.
In June last year it looked as though the fight was finally over when the flyover scheme was approved at a cost of £4.5m, but work was halted when it was discovered that the work would cost more than originally anticipated - and it has now doubled to £11m.
Work will start on building the new flyover in January, when the gap in the central reservation on the A64 will be closed.
