Evening Press to reclaim the streets

A drive from the York Evening Press to help reclaim the city's streets from "yobs" has proved a startling success, with more than 130 calls from the public leading to 65 arrests.

A pilot project to Operation Ratcatcher, led by the paper and run in conjunction with the police and Safer York partnership, ran after a winter campaign last year and is set to widen its scope.

Vigilant residents are being asked to stand up and be counted by acting as the police's eyes and ears across North Yorkshire.

The launch of the campaign-proper is an attempt to tackle petty thuggery and intimidation and will support the police initiative Operation Delivery.
