A Basildon Evening Echo campaign to create a memorial for murdered teenager Danielle Jones has raised more than £3,000.
Readers of the newspaper organised a series of fundraising events in memory of the teenager who was murdered by her uncle in 2001.
Discussions are now taking place as to how the money should be used.
A meeting between Echo staff, Danielle's parents, councillors, community leaders and planning experts discussed ways of creating a memorial and plans for a plaque with a simple inscription cast into a metal grate around the foot of an oak tree are being considered.
Danielle's parents Linda and Tony Jones said they were delighted at the amount of money that has been raised.
Dad Tony said: "I just want to thank everyone who gave to the fund - my wife and I were amazed by the amount of money that was raised. The community here have really backed us well."
