Thousands sign up in Times bid to save cancer centre

The Hillingdon & Uxbridge Times has been inundated with campaign forms for a local cancer centre.

The Times launched its campaign against plans to move vital cancer services from the world-renowned Mount Vernon Hospital in Northwood in May.

Within days of launching Save Our Cancer Centre the paper was flooded with hundreds of campaign forms, e-mails, and letters of support.

Almost 5,000 people have now signed up to save cancer services at the hospital.

Residents and campaigners have turned up week after week for public meetings and discussions, campaigning tirelessly, writing letters, lobbying health chiefs and speaking out against plans to move the world-renowned centre.

Every day postbags at the newspaper have been weighed down with more and more petition forms.

Campaigners and local companies have been photocopying forms and taking them around to everyone they know to be filled in.

More than 500 forms were received in one envelope alone - and every day the paper's e-mail in-box has been full with campaign forms that have been completed online.

The Times plans to hand the campaign forms over to the North West London Strategic Health Authority, which is leading the consultation.
