Bikers targeted by paper's off-road initiative

The Sheffield Star has launched a campaign to stop illegal off-road bikers who pose a threat to people's lives across South Yorkshire.

South Yorkshire police officers received 250 complaints between May and October over what has been branded a "dangerous and irritating" sport - but expect the figures to soar over the summer months.

Illegal off-road biking has started to overtake joyriding and burglary as the cause of most concern.

The Star is calling for speedier action to control the menace before more lives are lost. It wants the local authorities to designate areas where the bikers can ride legally and safely away from residential areas.

Sheffield MP and Sports Minister Richard Caborn has backed the campaign, pledging to do all he can to help find places for bikers to ride legally.
