Maggie's target doubled - to reach £1m

An Evening Times, Glasgow, appeal has topped £1m - double its original target.

The campaign was launched 18 months ago to raise money to build a Maggie's Centre - a dedicated cancer care centre - in Glasgow.

The original target of £500,000 was reached last December and the centre has now opened at the Western Infirmary, providing information and support to cancer sufferers and their friends and family.

And as it was opened it was revealed that the fundraising total has now been doubled, providing essential funds for the running of the centre in its first year.

Charity patron, author J K Rowling, said: "It's been wonderful to see Glasgow's first Maggie's Centre at last become a reality - thanks to the enormous effort of Evening Times readers."
