Initiative to put yobs out of the picture

The Manchester Evening News is calling on its readers to help reduce the level of vandalism on the region's public transport.

The paper revealed that some bus and train services are under threat because of the £4m annual repair bill which is run up by vandals.

And in one 'prank', a seat was booby-trapped with razor-sharp scalpel blades - fortunately spooted before anyone was injured.

As part of a scheme to curb vandalism, the MEN has agreed to publish photos of any yobs caught on new CCTV cameras which are being installed on vehicles.

Readers were told: "We are calling on every decent person to help bring these yobs to justice.

"We are urging readers who see vandals or thugs in action to tell police, the company concerned or to telephone the Crimestoppers hotline anonymously."

Police, local councillors and transport companies have all given their backing to the paper's initiative.
