Pride campaign hits the Commons

Tees Pride has been endorsed in parliament thanks to a motion from MP Ashok Kumar.

The Evening Gazette launched its campaign to focus on regeneration of the Tees Valley and to celebrate the success of business and community pride.

It is bringing together readers, businesses, local authorities and community groups.

They all want to:

  • create and protect jobs;
  • promote and encourage new business;
  • push for an integrated transport system;
  • clean up local streets;
  • highlight positives and challenge negatives;
  • support health and education initiatives;
  • raise money for good causes;
  • encourage debate.

    Evening Gazette editor Paul Robertson said: "We will be asking ordinary people what they want to see in their area and promoting an intelligent debate to ensure Teesside and Tees Valley is on the map for all the right reasons."

    Just two days after it began, Tees Pride was mentioned in the House of Commons.

    Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland MP Ashok declared in his motion: "This House welcomes the launch of the Tees Pride campaign and its aim of highlighting all that is good and positive about the Tees Valley.

    "The House believes that this frequently neglected part of Britain has some of the finest scenery in the country and still plays a crucial role in the creation of the nation's economic wealth and hoped the campaign will create a truer estimation of the area'' value to the country as a whole and lead to more young people coming to the area to appreciate its many merits."

    He also congratulated the Evening Gazette for initiating the campaign to ensure the area regained its "rightful place as one of the most significant parts of Great Britain".

    The motion was also sponsored by other local MPs, Frank Cook, Dari Taylor and Vera Baird.
