Citizen bid to save DJ from axe

Readers of the Citizen have helped to keep veteran broadcaster Jimmy Young on air.

The 79-year-old DJ from Gloucestershire has hosted his morning show on Radio 2 for 27 years.

But rumours were rife that his contract wasn't to be renewed, amid fears he doesn't fit in with the station's new look - prompting the Citizen to launch a campaign pleading Don't axe our Jim.

Now, just days after its launch, the BBC has begun talks to renew the DJ's contract, which runs out in March.

A spokesman for the presenter said: "Jim has been absolutely overwhelmed by the support from his many thousands of listeners. He is particularly grateful to readers of the Citizen."
