Ken answers SLP worries

London Mayor Ken Livingstone has used the columns of the South London Press to answer his critics and explain the benefits of a bus lane policy for Dulwich.

The paper launched a poster campaign to appeal to highways chiefs against plans to introduce bus-only lanes after traders and residents voiced their fears.

The three month-old campaign called for No Bus Lane in Lordship Lane, a move which would fly in the face of the London Bus Initiative Plan.

Local traders worry that bus lanes and accompanying parking restrictions will put them out of business.

The South London Press sent one of its posters to the man who will have the final say in the bus lane decision, Ken Livingstone.

But he told readers: "Buses are at the forefront of my plan to get London Transport moving.

"Residents and traders along Lordship Lane have been consulted twice on bus priority measures and their views on their second consultation are currently being reviewed.

"Original plans for bus lanes were revised according to local feeling.

"Improved public transport will bring even more shoppers to this already vibrant part of south London."
