Paper aims to drive home Post Office closure message

The Birmingham Mail is planning to take its fight to save 26 Post Offices in the city from closure to the heart of Government.

Editor Steve Dyson said the Trinity Mirror-owned daily would be driving a campaign bus with MPs and readers to Downing Street to personally deliver an ever-growing petition against the plans.

"We've already got 4,000 signatures on our petition which we're running in the paper for two weeks and we're speaking to the city council about using the town hall to chair a public meeting," said Steve.

"The petition is demanding the Government calls an immediate halt to the mass Post Office closure programme.

"We know we cannot stop them per se but we're against the fact they are doing so without any real consultation with the public. It's a tick-box consultation.

"We want them to go to each area and consider what they are doing."

Steve said some of the city's Post Offices were in very deprived areas and they acted as a social hub for communities, especially the elderly.

The Birmingham Mail is carrying campaign stories everyday both in print and online and is focussing on one of the 26 Post Office each day.

The petition can be downloaded and signed from birminghammail.net and Steve is also keeping readers abreast of developments from his 'Editor's Chair' blog.
