A campaign to clamp down on clampers in Peterborough has been supported by a county court judge in a ruling against a city clamping firm.

The judge told a driver that she was right to refuse to pay £350 for the release of her clamped car after finding it had been damaged.

The move came as good news for the Peterborough Evening Telegraph's Clamp the Clampers campaign, which has been fighting for the public in a battle to get rid of cowboy car clampers.

The court case took place after the city centre manager Sue Bolter had her car clamped and towed away after she had left it parked outside her office.

She wrote a cheque for £352.50 for release of the Peugeot 306, but later cancelled the payment when she found the car had been damaged. But the company took legal action, suing Ms Bolter for damages in the Small Claims Court.

Deputy district judge Sebastian Calnan said in Ms Bolter's special circumstances she did not have to pay the money because she was not told about the newly installed clamping system outside her office.
