By-pass campaign suffers setback

A newspaper campaign to get a new by-pass for Torbay has been dealt a blow with the news that the project won't be considered for another five years.

The Torquay Herald Express has been fighting for a Kingskerswell by-pass to replace the traffic-choked A380 that links Torbay to the rest of the country.

But Bernie Richardson, group transport manager at Torbay Council, has said it will take another five years to get ready to run a major public enquiry for the scheme.

Which means that it could be at least ten years before the people of Torbay can use the new by-pass.

Despite this, the Council remains upbeat about the scheme's prospects.

Mr Richardson said: "The Government sent us a letter with comments on our transport plan and noted our intentions to continue developing solutions.

"It means they are recognising there is work to do to get it up and going."

And to maintain the momentum, the Herald Express is printing petitions which they are urging readers to fill in. Once the paper has received a significant number, it will forward the forms to the Government.
