The Sentinel's Caring About Tomorrow campaign for a new £200 million single-site hospital has received a huge boost after a leading figure added his name to the campaign petition.
Dr Keith Prowse, medical director of North Staffordshire Hospital has joined more than 10,000 readers who have signed forms due to be delivered to Downing Street in the New Year.
The nationally-acclaimed chest physician, who has worked at the hospital since 1972, said: "I am signing this as an individual resident rather than as medical director.
"But being a doctor at the hospital I see every day the problems of trying to deliver modern medicine from two separate sites and in inadequate buildings which are more in keeping with Victorian times."
There has been great support for the campaign from the Staffordshire community but Dr Prowse is the first big name from the hospital to add his name. He revealed that it was the third time he had been involved in planning behind the scenes for a single site to be developed.
All five North Staffordshire MPs are also supporting the campaign, which was launched by the Sentinel to get a new hospital built in North Staffordshire.
Health Secretary Alan Milburn has to make a decision in the spring about whether to build a new hospital. The Government has money to build 18 new hospitals but 24 areas have submitted applications.
