'Vision on' in push to collect specs

More than 2,000 pairs of glasses have been collected for charity by readers of the Shields Gazette.

The paper ran a campaign in conjunction with Vision Express to collect the second-hand specs for people who can't afford to buy their own.

Vision Aid Overseas will donate the glasses to help people in underprivileged countries such as Gambia, Ghana, India and Uganda.

Retail assistant Lindsey Parkin said: "We had an excellent response to the Gazette campaign and we will be starting it up again in the New Year."
