Experts who will decide which is Britain's cleanest city have given their backing to Bath's Keep it Clean campaign.

The initiative, run jointly with the local authority and the Bath Chronicle, is dedicated to making the city a better place to live, by getting rid of unsightly rubbish in the streets.

And now the British Cleaning Council, which runs Britain's Cleanest City 2000, has praised the efforts being made to tackle litter in Bath.

The city has already made it to the last ten in the competition, helped by the launch earlier this year of the Keep It Clean campaign, which judges say has been a factor in the city's success so far.

A statement from the Cleaning Council recognised the key role which the Keep It Clean campaign was playing.

It said: "Bath attracts millions of visitors each year to sample the delights of its beautiful Georgian crescents and terraces, its magnificent medieval abbey and its excellent museums and galleries.

"It has numerous restaurants, cafes and bars, and plenty of theatre and live music.

"Despite the challenges this presents, the city claims to take great pride in keeping its streets clean and litter-free throughout the year.

"To help it do so a Keep It Clean campaign is one recent initiative launched in conjunction with the local daily newspaper."

Bath was a runner-up in the last competition two years ago, and will be competing with other cities that enjoyed success in 1999, including fellow semi-finalists, Peterborough and Westminster, and the winner Chester.
