Shop a drink-driver over Christmas

A Gallery of Shame is to appear in the Manchester Evening News during Christmas as the paper highlights motorists caught drink-driving around the city.

Over the festive period the paper will list details of motorists found to be over the limit and convicted by the courts.

Seven people have already been named and shamed by the newspaper.

The hard-hitting campaign, dubbed RATS - Ring and Tell Someone - targets drivers who ignore the festive advice and drive under the influence of alcohol.

The campaign is also being backed-up across the county by a poster with the message: One Dead - Family Destroyed, which shows the scene of an accident where a women has been hit by a drink driver.

More than 3,000 Christmas cards are also being sent to organisations, individuals and businesses to reinforce the message.

The move comes as Cheshire police issued a "shop a boozer" plea to keep deaths off the roads.

Supt Peter Duffy, who is in charge of the Cheshire campaign, said: "This year we will tighten the net around the people who think they can drink and drive.

"This attitude by selfish motorists is one that causes hundreds of casualties each year and destroys lives."

Police are also advising motorists never to drink and drive and instead, to nominate someone who is not drinking to take the wheel. They say even half a pint of beer can impair judgement.
