An Internet poll has revealed overwhelming public support for the Islington Gazette's Casualty Crisis campaign.
The caring campaign was started by the Gazette to try to get St Bart's Hospital's accident and emergency ward reopened following its closure in 1995.
As a result of the Gazette campaign, TV chiefs at Carlton are considering making a documentary about problems caused by the closure.
The newspaper has been highlighting incidents where lives have been lost because of the lack of a casualty department and 3,300 readers have signed a petition it organised.
Now 75 per cent of visitors to www.islington.org.uk have agreed with the statement that the closure has put lives at risk.
Only seven per cent opted for keeping the department closed and spending NHS cash on existing facilities.
Eighteen per cent said they had no opinion either way.
