Memorial bid moves forward

A poetry tribute to war heroes of Lanarkshire is to be inscribed on a new war memorial - thanks to a campaign in the Hamilton Advertiser.

The newspaper organised the contest as part of its campaign for a tribute to Lanarkshire's 14 Victoria Cross heroes to be built in the town square.

As work began on the monument, local school children were asked to write a poem to be inscribed on the front of it.

And now 11-year old Anna Smith's entry had been judged the winner.

As well as permanently leaving a mark in Hamilton, Anna has received two £100 cheques for her efforts - one from the Advertiser and another from Co-Op Memorial services, which is building the monument.

The sculpture comprises an archway of granite with the names and regiments of each VC hero etched in the stone. A replica of the Victoria Cross features at the base of the archway.

The council will lay the foundations for the memorial early next year.
