Westcountry paper leads City of Culture bid

Bristol could become the next British city to hold a prestigious European title if the Western Daily Press has its way.

The newspaper is launching a campaign to get council chiefs to apply to become the European Capital of Culture when the UK next hosts the title in 2008.

The last UK city to be given the award was Glasgow in 1990 and the title brought a host of benefits - both financially and culturally.

The Daily Press wants this to happen in the West Country but has warned Bristol City Council that time is running out.

In an impassioned article, the Press said: "Other cities are stealing a march on the West - among them Belfast, Newcastle and Liverpool are already well advanced with their applications.

"But, given a fair and non-political contest, Bristol could leave the others standing."

The council will make a decision in January on whether to submit an application and the Daily Press is planning a series of features to help councillors make up their minds.

It said: "The richness of the cultural diversity of Bristol make it a dream ticket and the Western Daily Press will highlight what makes it so special."

Winning the title would allow ambitious schemes, such as a multi-purpose stadium and a new concert venue to be given the go-ahead.

The Bristol Cultural Development Partnership, a public and private sector organisation, is backing the campaign - along with other local groups.

It was originally thought that Bath and Bristol would submit a joint bid but as this is against competition rules, Bath will instead form part of the Bristol bid.

Applications have to be submitted to the government by March 2002 and the Prime Minister will pick a winner the following Spring.
