Warning posters are being put up in every Post Office in Grimsby and Cleethorpes urging people to guard against thieves and robbers.
The project is a joint campaign by police and the Grimsby Telegraph and follows an alarming number of muggings in the area in the last three weeks.
The first poster was put up at Grimsby's Ripon Street Post Office.
Det Insp Phil Spicksley of Grimsby CID, who was on "high visibility" duty, said he hoped the initiative would help reverse the recent trend of "horrific" incidents, particularly involving elderly people after they had used town Post Offices.
"We would like to warn the public and advise them to contact the police should they have any concerns about people hanging about near Post Offices, cash dispensers and banks," he said.
"I would advise the elderly to be accompanied if possible to the Post Office or go with a friend."
The advice given on the poster is:
Put all cash and valuables, such as keys, in your pockets, preferably inside pockets.
Report all suspicious persons and incidents to the police.
If someone grabs your bag, let it go. It is not worth being injured for.
