Youngsters in Cumbria are being reminded that it's cool to "belt up".
Children are flouting the rules on school buses because it's not the done thing to wear a seatbelt in the company of their friends.
But a senior hospital surgeon is backing the Carlisle News & Star's "belt up" campaign, which is being run in conjunction with the police.
Drivers in north Cumbria who flout the laws are currently being hit with £30 fixed penalties in a police crackdown. A thousand people have been caught in the past six months
Dr Peter Sellar, from West Cumberland Hospital, said the introduction of seat belt laws had reduced the number of serious facial and eye injuries from road accidents.
