Warm Homes Bill becomes law

A new law that was kick-started by the Nottingham Evening Post has come into force.

The Warm Homes Bill has received Royal Assent, which means a programme of providing households with a package of insulation, heating and other energy efficiency improvements can get under way

It was inspired by an Evening Post campaign that was launched 15 years ago.

Reporter David Lowe highlighted the plight of elderly people during the winter months.

And a Fuel Fund was also set up to run alongside it to help individuals suffering from "fuel poverty", where they were wary of using heating for fear they might not pay the bills.

Now, 15 years on, David is still at the paper to see the campaign's success.

Local MP Alan Simpson, who sponsored the Bill through the Commons, said: "What turned it from an impossibility to a reality was that the campaign built up outside Parliament.

"I had the background of being part of the Evening Post's Old and Cold campaign, which had been saying for many years this was a national scandal."
