Greenwich Council has thrown its weight behind the Baby BJ campaign in the Mercury series of newspapers in South London.
The campaign was started to raise funds for a baby left severely disabled by a bout of meningitis.
The newspaper, which covers Lewisham, Bexley, Greenwich and Streatham, hopes to raise £12,000 to buy a cover for the baby's therapy pool.
So far, readers have donated £3,000 which has prompted the local council to register its support.
A council spokesman said: "With the money being raised by Mercury readers, we can help make this become a real team effort.
"With the contacts the council has and people's goodwill, we can make the money go as far as possible."
George Applegate, BJ's father, said: "We are stunned that after just three weeks, things are moving so quickly. We really can't believe the response to the whole thing. It has been overwhelming."
