Morning paper plans big changes for the 21st century

The Liverpool-based Daily Post is to unveil a brand-new look for the 21st century.

From Monday the Daily Post will see the introduction of new supplements, increased news coverage, a wholesale redesign and a bold new masthead which will include the name 'Liverpool' for the first time in more than 25 years.

Editor Jane Wolstenholme said: "These are very exciting times for Liverpool and the surrounding region and this is absolutely the right time to be investing in a paper like the Daily Post.

"We have approached this project with a real desire to be radical wherever it was necessary.

"We didn't want to simply polish up our existing editorial package; we wanted to scrutinise every element of our operation. That meant looking at the methods we use to sell the paper and how they fit in with the lifestyles of our ABC1 readership.

"It meant looking hard at our marketing proposition, and editorially it meant being prepared to present our readers with an entirely different package from the one they are used to."

The changes follow the Post's split from its Welsh counterpart in autumn 2002. The Post's changes come exactly a year after its former twin title, managed separately in North Wales, was relaunched.

One major change to the Trinity Mirror paper will be its new design, which has been masterminded by design editor Gary Bainbridge. He approached the project as if he was designing a completely new product.

He said: "Most redesigns aim to give the paper a new lick of paint. With this one, we've knocked the whole house down and rebuilt it brick by brick."

There will be several new supplements, including Post Match, a sports supplement for the "thinking fan" every Monday, and Golf North West, aimed at Merseyside and Cheshire's golf enthusiasts every Tuesday.

Later in the week Retail Therapy will provide readers with a luxury consumer and style guide, Box Office will provide a guide to arts and entertainment every Friday and Elegant Homes, featuring the region's most desirable properties, will be published every Saturday.

  • A fleet of ten tricycles ridden by newspaper sellers will become a regular feature in Liverpool from March 1, helping to get the new-look title out on to the streets.

    Believed to be the first of their kind in the UK, the tricycles will be in key sites in the city centre from 7.15am each day and will move around the city depending on where they find most of their potential purchasers.
