Awards open for maritime journalists

The best maritime journalists and writers can now enter an annual competition.

The Maritime Foundation has been running its media awards since 1995 and now offers five prize categories:

  • Desmond Wettern Media Award for the best journalistic contribution
  • Donald Gosling Award for best television, film or radio contribution
  • Desmond Wettern Fleet Award for best media contribution from HM Ship, submarine, Royal Naval Air Squadron or Royal Marine Unit
  • Mountbatten Maritime Award for best literary contribution
  • Maritime Fellowship Award for an outstanding lifetime contribution in a particular maritime field
  • Prizes will be presented at the ceremony in London on 28 October by the Foundation's president Countess Mountbatten of Burma and the First Sea Lord Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope.

The Maritime Media Awards were first held in 1995 with one journalism prize presented in memory of Desmond Wettern, former naval correspondent with the Daily Telegraph.

Previous winners include broadcaster Libby Purves OBE and defence writer Michael Evans.

Awards chairman Julian Parker OBE said: "What started out as an informal evening has grown into an important event for both the maritime industry and the media.

"Given how vital our sea links will be to this country's economic recovery, it seems fitting that those whose work is outstanding within this area receive the recognition they deserve."

  • The deadline for entries is 31 July – for more information and to enter visit the Maritime Foundation website.
