Huge cash prize on offer to budding motoring journalists

Would-be Top Gear presenters can now enter a prestigious annual motoring journalism award.

The Sir William Lyons Award, promoted by the Guild of Motoring Writers, offers the winner a £1,500 prize and work experience with a leading motoring publication.

Many past winners have gone on to become leading automotive writers.

Entries must consist of two articles – a 500-word interview with a figure closely involved with motoring and a 1,000-word article on one of four subjects:

  • Does the UK need to have a motor industry?
  • What role should the motor industry play in helping to address today's environmental issues?
  • Caring for pollution or congestion, what's the best way to manage traffic growth?
  • People only buy cars with their heads not their hearts?
  • The judges will be looking for flair, style, enthusiasm and journalistic potential.

Full details are on the entry form available from Patricia Lodge on generalsec@gomw.co.uk.

After July 1, the forms will be available to download from the Guild of Motoring Writers' website.

The competition is free to enter to any British national living in the UK aged between 17 and 23-years-old. Deadline for entries is October 1.
