Senior assistant editor Paul Hartley said The Mail won the top award of Newspaper of the Year for compelling content, strong columns, bright pages and a "progressive approach to new media".

But the prizes didn't end there as the Mail won Breaking News Story of the Year for their coverage of June's devastating floods.

Judges praised the Mail for covering every angle of the story which included posting video footage on their website of the floods as they actually happened.

The paper was also highly commended in the Front Page of the Year category and Paul Hartley for Headline Writer of the Year.

Deputy editor Mel Cook said: "It is a real honour and a massive achievement to win Yorkshire Daily Newspaper of the Year four times in five years.

"We are delighted the quality of the journalism in the Mail has been recognised yet again.

"This is a tribute to all the staff who produce the Mail to an excellent standard every day."

The Mail was also short-listed in Campaign of the Year for their Troops in Peril initiative, which highlighted the plight of soldiers who told the paper they were being placed at extra risk serving their country.

Other short-listed nominees included Kevin Shoesmith for Daily News Reporter of the Year, John Collingridge for Trainee of the Year and columnist Ian Midgley in the Daily Feature Writer of the Year.
