Seven gongs for university at Guardian Student Media Awards

York University scooped seven awards at the annual Guardian Student Media Awards.

Heidi Blake took home the top prize of Journalist of the Year as well as being crowned Feature Writer of the Year and Diversity Writer of the Year.

She will also enjoy a six-week work experience placement at The Guardian.

Fellow York student Lucy Taylor won Reporter of the Year for her piece on student rape and Richard Webb was crowned Critic of the Year.

To cap off the accolades York Vision was crowned Newspaper of the Year and the university's website Nouse – edited by Heidi Blake – came runner-up in the Website of the Year category.

Leeds University student Natalie Whelan took home gold in the new category of Broadcaster of the Year.

Judge Jon Snow said: "Natalie was head and shoulders above anyone else, a serious sleuth.

"She got hold of all sorts of footage and stopped at nothing to get material."

Natalie also wins a week's work experience at the Guardian plus a six-week expenses paid placement at Sky News.

The judging panel also included Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger, Grazia editor Jane Bruton, Heat editor Mark Frith and Newsnight presenter Kirsty Wark.

The students received their awards from TV presenter and comedian Hardeep Singh Kohli at a ceremony in London.

Now in their 29th year, the awards have helped kick-start hundreds of media careers with the list of past winners including former FT editor Andrew Gowers and Emily Barr, journalist and author.

The full results list will appear in Monday's MediaGuardian.
