Regional journalists vie for health writing award and £1,000 prize pot

Huddersfield Daily Examiner journalist Adrian Sudbury and South Wales Evening Post journalist Liz Perkins are among the nominees for this year's Guild of Health Writers Awards.

The regional press staffers have been shortlisted alongside national and freelance writers who report on a variety of health-related subjects, and will both vie for the Best Contributor to Online Health award.

Adrian scooped his place on the shortlist after penning a personal blog about his fight against a unique form of leukaemia, broadcasting footage of his bone marrow transplant on the internet.

And South Wales Evening Post health reporter Liz won her place after impressing judges with a series of articles including reports on a tuberculosis outbreak at a Swansea school and the paper's campaign to save neurosurgery services in the city.

The Guild of Health Writers writing award is open to all freelance and staff writers, with the winners of the two main categories, Best Consumer Health Writer and Best Trade/Specialist writer, each receiving £1,500.

The winners of three further categories, for Best Contributor to Online Health, Best Young Writer and Best Freelance Writer, will each receive £1,000.

Winners will be announced at a champagne reception at The Foreign Press Association in London on October 11.
