Student journalists in Scotland have been recognised at two separate award ceremonies to honour emerging industry talent.

Hannah Thomas, from Edinburgh University, was named Student Journalist of the Year at The Herald's Scottish Student Press Awards, scooping £500 and a four-week paid placement in the paper's newsroom as her prize.

Hannah also won the best news writer award, while fellow Edinburgh students Miles Johnson and Samantha Saward won best feature writer and best sports writer respectively.

The university's newspaper, Student, won the award for best newspaper.

At the same event, the best photographer award went to Johnny McLauchlan from Glasgow Metropolitan College.

Napier University's Veritas newspaper won best production and Cardonald College's Cardonald Courier won best college publication, while the best magazine award went to Qmunicate, from Glasgow University.

Meanwhile at the Write Stuff Scottish Student Journalism Awards, Louise Brown from Cardonald College was named overall Student Journalist of the Year as well as scooping first prize in the college categories for News Writing, Feature Writing and Entertainment Writing.

The College Sports Writing award went to Steven Barry from Cardonald College.

In the university categories, all the awards went to students from the Scottish Centre for Journalism Studies.

The Feature Writing award went to Adam Forrest, Suzanne Hart won best Entertainment Writing and Claire Brooks scooped the Sports Writing prize.

Andy Milne won the News Writing prize, and also collected two Special Awards: The Glasgow Anti-Racist Alliance Special Award and The Society of Editors Scoop of the Year, for an article he wrote about the British National Party.
